Study Raises Questions About Fluoridation

A recent study published in JAMA Pediatrics found that higher levels of fluoride exposure during pregnancy were associated with lower levels of IQ in some children. While more research is needed on the topic, the study did note that “these findings indicate the possible need to reduce fluoride intake during pregnancy.”

North American cities began adding fluoride to public drinking water over five decades ago in an effort to prevent dental caries. Japan and 97% of European countries do not fluoridate their water. Whether water fluoridation is a public health achievement, or a health hazard, has been the subject of intense debate since its inception.
